“The opportunity to see Early Years Education in Tasmania has been invaluable”
In August a group of 10 enthusiastic teachers representing 8 schools from Bristol and Bath and North East Somerset LAs spent a week in Devonport in Tasmania on a TIPD visit focusing on the theme of Early Years Education. The group was hosted by the Department of Education Learning Services (North West).
The Department organised a varied programme meeting the aims and objectives of the group. The visit included inputs on the Tasmanian education system, school visits and time for discussion with local teachers.
The group have gathered many ideas for developing good practice back in their schools such as introducing a daily exercise programme and using calmer voices! An additional benefit from the visit was the fact that the group learnt a lot from each other as individual teachers and this is a link that they hope will continue back in Bristol and Bath.
Jet lag forgotten, the teachers rated the visit extremely successful on all levels both professionally and personally and have drawn up many proposals for dissemination. These include feedback to the local Nursery Teacher Cluster group, running staff and governors meetings and feedback to local universities.
E-mails addresses have been swapped and it is hoped that Early Years practice will continue to be shared across the miles.
